Who we are:

Operating out of the Centre for Human Rights (CHR) at York University, the Masculinities Network (M-NET) is a community of self-identified men intent on repelling silences around violence and sexual assault and addressing its spread by:

  • Encouraging men to take personal responsibility for their role and to understand their rights in the struggle to prevent gender-based violence.
  • Exploring and challenging the ways in which masculinities are socially constructed and expressed via reflection on our gendered selves,
  • Investigating the relationship between masculinity, violence, and rape, and devising methods for gender-based violence prevention on campus.

What we do:

Through peer-to-peer interventions at York University, M-NET:

  • Kindles conversations and forges alliances both among members and throughout the York community (including students, faculty and staff); and
  • Participates in community events and collective action projects (including collaborative writing projects, the M-NET blog, invited speakers, organized presentations, focus groups etc.).

What we offer you:

Opportunities to contribute to decreasing gender-based violence at York University by commencing dialogues and initiatives that challenge you and your peers to think about gender, masculinity, and violence in different ways. The shape and agenda of M-NET will depend on the input of its membership.

Members should be:

Self-identified men from York University who are:

  • Concerned about the wide-spread nature of gender-based violence,
  • Passionate about social justice and equity and want to challenge the relationship between traditional masculinity, violence, and power,
  • Convinced that it is important for men to take responsibility for the prevalence of gender-based violence in this society.

Please Note: Members do not need experience or education to join the team. All self-identified male students are welcome.
